Metropolitan Costume Institute’s Gala 2010: said to “prom night for fashionistas,” is a huge success!

As the museum in partnership, with Vogue and The Gap, opened their exhibit “American Women: Fashioning a National Identity” many well-known fashionable women from all around the world walked the red carpet looking fabulous and showing us this even was no less than Prom-worthy!  Monday night’s Met costume institute gala raised $9 million and over 725 guests attended the new exhibit. Last years gala celebrating “The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” raised only $5.4 million.

Although many women dawned classic, beautiful looks like I have already posted, there were  still those that chose to represent the art through their attire by wearing gowns that were more on the fun and funky side through their many intricate hand-made details and unique colors.  More of these fashionable women and their gowns on Huffington Post or E online!

Chloe Sevigny wore a Proenza Schouler dress to the met, was it a hit or miss? On the upside the color looked great on her and the detail of the hand-stitched lace was amazing, but  with the dresses open back dawning a bra, rather than skin as well as the revealing see-through front, I would have to say this dress was an overall miss.

Another star, Blake Lively, who decided to go for a more fun and funky look as well I think rocked it in a royal blue micro-mini dress by Marchesa. Her gorgeous gams looked long and lean and I loved the fact that she wore her hair all back and so simple.  With a dress that has a lot going on like hers does with its many ruffles and faux flowers the hair, accessories, makeup, it all needs to remain simplistic.  Therefore Blake Lively pulled it off and looks stunning! Other blogs have made it clear they think otherwise about Lively’s choice, but I disagree.  Yes it is true she continues to choose rather revealing and more sexy style gowns, but at the end of the day she looks great them and really plays up the gown by looking amazing in it and pairing it with minimal accessories, therefore what is the problem?

Sienna Miller is another example of a star who always tries new things when it comes to fashion and never plays it safe on the red carpet.  I think she looked beautiful in Emilio Pucci, I absolutely love black and midnight blue combine together in clothing, the color combination is so fresh for night time, yet the effortlessly beautiful stare was still not the winner of style for the night in my book.

The ladies who won me over on the red carpet could not be anybody but those who chose the combination of wearing an over the top gown that resembled old hollywood in all its elegance, as well as still being completely up-to-date with this season’s trend of flesh-tone colored fabrics covered in silk, sequins and/or rhinestones.  The ladies graced the red carpet with the perfect combination of glamour, poise and feminine accents! They were definitely the winners of the night, that is saying (Camilla Belle is still included, even though she wore red!)

Stars Wowed in Glitz and Glamorous Gowns @ Met Costume Institute Gala 2010

The fabulous women of the “Hollywood spotlight” really wowed the cameras at this year’s Met Costume Institute Gala.  Although there were still the innovative gowns that are rather out there in style, but artistically fun to look at ; there was surprisingly a lot more dressed to kill in fabulous, floor-length, classier gowns than ever before seen.

These women below made my jaw drop in “awe,” who can even begin say which is their favorite, I love them all!

Even Classic Style Has Edge Every Now and Then!

This blog post is for my mom, whom I love very much, but desperately needs to find the funk in her classic GAP, J. Crew and Banana Republic Style.  Her style icon: I would have to go with Jennifer Aniston, which is why I am very excited for this blog post. I have searched high and low to find the best of both worlds for my mom classic style meets edgy trends.  This style, or should I say Jennifer Aniston’s style, is definitely something my mom can pull off (almost already does) along with many other women today.  I love Jennifer Aniston’s style because it is, as we all know, the epitome of girl next door.  In everything she wears, Aniston resembles effortless beauty.  Of course her style is not for everyone as it may be a tad bit redundant or should I bluntly say; boring.  But for women like my mom, Jennifer Anniston does the perfect combination of casual tomboy meets a girly classic style with one or two trendy statement  pieces at the most.  The catch is to remember always to add at least one statement piece to draw attention to yourself at all.

These snapshots prove that from day-to-night, from the red carpet to the streets Jennifer Aniston always dawns a classic-cool style.

Go-to items:

Day – cool leather jackets, great statement hats, classic wedges, breezy blouses and sun dresses, flattering tom-boy cargos, a great pair of everyday jeans, a boyfriend denim, wrap cardigans, classic aviators, fine, hand-made jewelry, classic-cool aviators, leather belts and lastly a scarf to finish off most outfits.

Night – To pull of a black dress with a thigh-high split as effortlessly as Aniston does the trick is to choose a focal point on your outfit or body.  For example in a mini-dress Aniston’s legs are the focal point by covering her arms.  She adds a bit of edge by pairing classic gray-opaque tights for the cooler weather.  She sticks to little jewelry and feminine, strapped sandals or platform peep-toe pumps.

No matter what outfit Jennifer Aniston looks great, but even she adds a little kick to her style by wearing a bold-statement piece and/or an edgy piece.  So remember that ladies, even though we want to look classic and cool, it is important to add the one piece in on the mix to draw the eyes in!

Make A Statement In White

With summer less than a month away and labor day so far away, I say every gal should try substituting that go-to black LBD (little black dress) for an incredibly fresh LWD (little white dress)!  These white-hot celebrities have already stored their black dresses for a more sober day and opened the door to a new fresh, statement piece like the white dress.

Of course I am not always a huge fan of dresses all the time, since I do like to be different, I suggest making a double statement in an all white outfit in menswear style! I think this look works well on every woman just as well, if not better, as an all black pant suit… really streamlining any woman’s curves.

I just really love all white outfits in general, if done tastefully, and white is always fresh and in style during summer!  I even love just plain white skinnie jeans with a thick white tank under a silk, all white boyfriend blazer. (Add some statement jewelry and your set!)

Now if only I had a big party to go to where I could wear an amazing dress like these below… :-/ hmmm, my 21st is coming up, maybe I’ll start plotting it now! 🙂

Camilla Belle looks absolutely breathtaking in this white Marchesa! I love the dress' babydoll style with its black satin belt. One can never go wrong with a white dress and black details!

Abbie Cornish exudes classic elegance in a white-hot piece from Calvin Klein Collection, sporting the look again with black accessories!

another example where one can never go wrong breaking up a white dress with black accessories and Rachel Bilson does it beautifully in Chanel

Rose Byrne in design by Hakan

Kate Bosworth shows us how effortless her beauty can look in this white design by Calvin Klein Collections and an easy DIY (do it yourself) side braid!

Taylor Swift looks super chic in a mini by Jenny Packham

Olivia Wilde dawns a more structured than normal design by Marchesa and again rocks it with the black accessories, it is hard to keep your eyes off her!

Jessica Alba rocked the white pant suit outfit! love!

I love this look because it shows how to pull off menswear in the summer!

Molly Sims shows how to make an all white look work for any day!

Famous little black dress with a twist!

This past weekend I tried on an amazing black Theory dress.  It was a perfectly fitted staple to add to my closet, already adorning a perfect accessory a thin, black and gold belt. (A good one too, unlike the fake cheap ones added to dresses just to give you an idea of how to accessorize the dress.)

Trying on this dress, I thought about my wardrobe and how I have failed to invest in that perfect LBD (little black dress).  Wondering why I had always passed on such a classic piece in the past definitely made me think about why the LBD even became known as a “staple.”  Why have so many woman (especially stars like Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie) continued to dawn this look time after time?  I think the most obvious answer to the proceeding question lies in our star-struck gazes while viewing the photos below.  Each designer these actresses are wearing has taken the perfect LBD, a “staple,” and so creatively given it a fun, quirky and tastefully (might I add) an unusual twist, that many designers in the past have not.

Who doesn't love Blake Lively in this bad-gal number by D&G?

Leave it to Leighton Meester to find the edgiest LBD around, but like I said earlier definitely a fun twist compared to your everyday, black dress. A risk that designer Christopher Kane chose to make, unlike many others.

When does Michael Kors ever make a bad design? This dress is a perfect combination of bringing out the more classic side of an edgy piece. And what better actress to rock this look than Fergie, a woman with some edge who gets in touch with her classic sense of style for a red carpet event.

Emile de Ravin showing off her gorgeous gams in a more sexier number than normal designed by Oscar de la Renta.

Gemma Arterton wears sheer cutouts gracefully, by Gucci

Another Oscar de la Renta gown, this time showing more of his classier Audrey Hepburn designs worn by Kristin Davis.

Alexa Davalos proves that a one-shouldered gown can still be 100% classic, especially when designed by Ralph Lauren, a man who exudes timelessness in all of his collections.

Who would have thought Angelina Jolie would start a trend after rocking a strapless, black, leather-cocktail dress and making it seem timeless. Similar looks are continuously dawned on the Red Carpet, like this Thomas Wylde dress on Miley Cyrus.

Jennifer Aniston is the queen or sporting the famous LBD, but very rarely does she wear one with such a twist like this sequined, skirted Valentino micro-mini.

I can easily see myself rocking a shorter depiction of this Rachel Roy dress worn by Kate Hudson at any club downtown!

Kate Winslet in another beautiful piece dawning sexy, lace cut-outs.

Love the one-shouldered, grecian look to this dress. It flatters Mila Kunis beautifully!

Love the one-shouldered, Grecian look to this dress. It flatters Mila Kunis beautifully!

After seeing how the celebrities above have all chosen to wear such beautiful black numbers on the red carpet over any other color, I believe it is safe me to assume that for any event, any day, any time it is safe to say that one can never go wrong with an LBD.  Seeing the beautiful effect that the above dresses has had on all the stars yet again proves to me that a black dress whether long or short, one-shouldered or strapless, leather or silk, sequined or lace, belted or gathered, has and will remain a “staple” because it is an option that never fails. Usually more times than not, this is the time stars can skip out on the fear of being worst dressed.

That is why one should always own that perfect go to black dress and/or that famous LBD with a twist, because when in doubt go for the black dress.  If I am afraid of my dress to appearing boring then I will add fun colored pump or different colored jewelry to spice things up and drawn one’s attention in.

Spring’s Top Five Must Have Looks: #4 Abstract Prints

I am absolutely loving all the jaw-dropping prints that celebrities, as wells many women in general, are daring to wear.  The Via C department at Nordstrom in Fashion Valley Mall is beginning to carry more and more of the brand “Helmut Lang” and designs the edgiest, but still flattering, pieces for women with a reoccurring abstract print throughout their entire 2010 Spring Collection that is just mystifying!  What I really envy about this collection compared to any of the other abstract collections I have seen is the brand’s ability to mix such a bold and abstract print with the everyday classic colors like black and white and then going on to add only splashes of color here and there throughout each piece.  This tactic kept the collection from being overdone in all its trendiness, therefore women of all ages and all cultures can dawn any look from this brand and still look beautiful without being over the top and still exude confidence, classic and poise all in one!

Although I talk about loving how well Helmut Lang did their abstract collection, that does not mean I have not found many other pieces by many other brands that I do not love just as much.  As much as I like to be classic, I still like to be different and stand out on my own.  Now I know any abstract print will do that for me, but lots of color will help with that as well :)!  Designer brands like Giambattista Valli, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Diane Von Furstenberg and even non-designer stores like American Apparrel, Urban Outfitters and surprisingly J. Crew are creating some fun and edgy abstract pieces.

Big celebrities like Zoe Saldana, Amanda Seyfried, Anna Paquin, Camilla Belle (whom I love), Leighton Meester (a repeat offender, but I continue to love it) and so many more continue to walk to red carpet dressed as if they had just been the muse and canvas to an artist earlier in the day.  And now even my mom will be dawning an abstract printed DVF (Diane Von Furstenberg) dress to a wedding she is attending in San Francisco next weekend and man is she going to rock it!  Of course many of the pictures below are stars dawning these bold prints in micro mini dresses, but there are plenty of gorgeous blouses, skirts, jackets and even tapered pants displaying fun and similar prints.  If you are on a budget I recommend Forever Twenty-One of course; that store never fails to have so many look a-likes and a newer store I have recently come to love is H&M thanks to traveling in San Francisco and shopping online.  (I am not sure what it is, but the San Diego H&M is not holding up to its standards.)

I think this trend has to be my favorite of all for this coming Spring what better way to look and feel beautiful and sexy than by wearing a gorgeous, creative and different prints like these.  If you feel that pattern is too bold, I would definitely stick to minimal jewelry and wearing a more classic shoe.  (Again a nude peep-toe pump is perfect with this trend because then you are letting the print stand on its own and drawing the eye in one place.)

Spring’s Top 5 Must Have Looks: #3 Tapered Trouser Pant

So I was in San Francisco this past weekend staying at the Marriott downtown by Union Square and of course I could not miss out on an exciting shopping experience with all the new trends out for this Spring!  There are so many options available in this city from all the great department stores to  the quirky vintage stores that there is truly never enough time to get through all of them.  One brand that I absolutely love and have continued to wear a few pieces by, but had never actually been in the store, is “Club Monaco.”  I was so excited when I saw one in the Westfield Mall that I practically sprinted  inside!  It’s casual, cool clothes worn to any event and go from day to-night by simply adding or taking off one layered piece.

Anyways the brand has created an amazing collection this Spring, probably one of the best I have seen so far.  Their clothes represent an edgier mix of Banana Republic and J. Crew with that same classic, cool, relaxed style and feel.  I was even able to find these amazing tapered ankle slacks available in black and grey that will be great for going to work in or even going out on the town!  I had actually been looking for a pair that weren’t over done, being that I am not  walking the runway, but still had the trendy feel I wanted!  These Club Monaco pants do exactly that with their perfect light-weight wool feel, the relaxed fit around the leg and my favorite a subtle chocolate on the black or black on the grey button detail for when I want to wear a blouse tucked in.  Best of all they were only $139 and even better: students get %20 discount!

I know $139 may seem pricey to some for a pair of pants, but these aren’t just any pants, they are the go to fit for spring and a great substitute for your regular, everyday jeans!  (I know we have all spent over $100 on at least one pair of jeans in the past.)  These pants are worn casual or dressy and are also perfect for when you want to rock the menswear look!  (Another style that will continue to remain popular in the Spring!)  Wear tapered ankle pants like these out on the town with a slouchy vest worn open with a sheer blouse underneath that has a girly print to counteract the vest and slacks and the outfit is ready-to-wear!  I also love the look of mixing these pants with a boyfriend blazer or a cropped leather jacket for  when the weather is a bit on the colder side.  Pair the look with ankle boots, menswear lace-up flats, or even just your basic peep-toe pumps and your set!  I plan to pair the slacks I just got with a great nude wedge which will help elongate my leg, since they are an ankle pant one can risk looking short and stumpy in this look if the slacks don’t fit right or do not mix well with the shoes. One actress who rocked this look perfectly is Victoria Beckham!
